While the 90s Hindi cinema was dominated by many star kids like Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan, an outsider came along and quickly climbed the ladder to success. We are talking about Akshay Kumar. An accomplished martial artist, the actor brought in a new wave of action cinema, being able to pull off fight and stunt sequences not seen before in Hindi cinema. He starred in a series of films with Khiladi in the title, leading the media to rechristen him Khiladi Kumar. Akshay is known for his excellent comic timing and action sequences. He has worked in more than 100 films in a career spanning more than three decades. Akshay has won the National Film Award for Rustom, two Filmfare Awards for Ajnabee and Garam Masala. Do you know how Akshay started his journey into films? His real name is Rajiv Bhatia. He was born in a Punjabi Hindu family in Old Delhi. Passionate about sports and martial arts, Akshay trained in karate while in school and later went to Bangkok to learn Thai kickboxing. In Bangkok, along with training in Thai kickboxing, he also worked as a chef and a waiter to make his ends meet.
Upon returning from Bangkok, he began training children in martial arts. One day, the parents of one of his students suggested that he should consider a career in modelling. According to reports, Akshay worked as an assistant to photographer Jayesh Sheth and also took on roles as a background dancer and stuntman before eventually securing a lead role in films. He made his first screen appearance in the film Aaj under his birth name in a bit role as a martial arts instructor
One morning, he missed his flight for an ad shoot in Bangalore. Feeling disappointed, he decided to visit a film studio with his portfolio in hand. By that evening, Akshay Kumar was signed for a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for the movie Deedar.
He did not achieve success initially but his natural charisma and physical abilities were noticed. One of Akshay Kumar’s early successes was Yeh Dillagi alongside Kajol, which earned him several award nominations. Following this, the Khiladi franchise solidified his image as an action hero in the industry. He made a significant impact with films such as Khiladi, Khatarnak Khiladi, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Khiladi 420, and Sabse Bada Khiladi. Later on, he switched over to comedy roles where he excelled as well.
