Bangalore: One more sugarcane farmer has attempted suicide in Davanagere district in central Karnataka. The 33-year-old debt-ridden farmer allegedly took the extreme step because he was distressed after a relative he had borrowed money from, fought with him on Monday for return of the loan.
The unfortunate farmer Halesh is now recovering at a hospital where he was admitted after consuming poison in his village near Harihar taluk. He was growing sugarcane in a small two and-a half acre plot.
Just a week back, another sugarcane farmer took poison and ended his life while participating in an agitation along with other sugarcane farmers to demand better prices for the crop. The government later increased the minimum purchase price of sugarcane, but farmers have been asking for more.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has held a talk with the leaders of farmers' groups to resolve the crisis.
The Centre, too, has convened a meeting of major sugarcane growing states Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh in New Delhi on December 6 to discuss the crisis.
