THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Though Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan’s remarks against CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan may, on the face of it, appear as a challenge to the organisational structure of the party, it has given a sense of belonging to a large number of disillusioned party members and fellow travelers, if one goes by their responses. Many feel that Achuthanandan’s recollection of the happenings of the past was nothing but a corrective measure when the party leadership preferred to ignore the battle of emotions in the minds of many workers who are bruised by the tussle in the party. They find his words and deeds quite reassuring at a time when the party, according to them, was losing its face, especially outside the Vadakara-Thalassery belt after T P Chandrasekharan’s murder. What makes them spirited was the belief that Achuthanandan’s fury was against the manner of treatment meted out to those who raise their protest in the party, than the murder per se. “Achuthanandan was the major factor which kept back many in the party though they were unhappy over the direction in which the party was moving. The latest statements offer a boost to their stand,’’ says K C Umeshbabu, poet and political activist who left the CPM a few years back. Umeshbabu said the Opposition Leader’s close association with the slain leader might have forced him to utter the words in praise of Chandrasekharan and his comrades. This was evident from the applause the national award-winning film director Suveeran received at a function organised by V T Kumaran Foundation and attended by a CPM crowd at Vadakara town hall on Sunday night, when he said, “there are lot of sub texts for this text in a contemporary society which witnessed the murder of T P Chandrasekharan, who drew me to SFI, as most of the local myths are based on murders of the oppressed by the oppressor.’’ He said this in an apparent attempt to lay bare certain hard political myths while delivering a speech after releasing a book by V K Prabhakaran based on a local myth. Though Achuthanandan’s statement may go over the head of party members, it has passed a message to those who constitute the party’s mass base which makes the CPM the single largest party in the Assembly. The party state leadership’s delay tactics and cautious reaction to a very grave allegation by Achuthanandan is also a pointer to the fact that it has gone on the back foot in the issue unlike in the SNC-Lavalin issue in which both Pinarayi and VS were suspended from the politburo after it found that both had violated party code of conduct through their outbursts before the media.
