KOCHI: Severe lapse in admissions to engineering colleges have come to light. Thirty students who secured less than 30 marks in mathematics have been admitted to various engineering colleges including aided colleges.“When we assessed the marks of 500 students in the rank list, 10 students have fared poorly in maths, securing marks as low as 7 and 10,” said Dr Sanal Kumar, coordinator, CBSE-ICSE Parents Forum. There are around 50,000 students in the rank list. The prospectus clearly states that only those who have secured 50 per cent marks in physics, chemistry and biology and 50 per cent in maths are eligible for entrance examinations and that the attested mark list should be submitted before June 30, he said.Ever since the rank list was published the procedures have been mired in controversy, he said. Due to the addition of plus-two marks and normalisation procedures, many eligible candidates who secured high marks lost seats and desired subjects due to normalisation, he said. The Commissioner of Entrance Examination B S Mavoji said that even students who attempt plus-two examination can appear for the entrance examination. These students have secured a place in the rank list based on the entrance examination. Plus-two examination marks are added for allotment and when they approach colleges, it is up to the principals to verify the marks while admitting them. Students who have not secured 50 percent marks are not eligible to continue their education and their fee will be refunded, he said.
