Bhubaneswar (Orissa): We often complain of delays in our judiciary system. But on Saturday, a sessions court in Bhubaneswar passed a verdict, which is one of the fastest in the country.
Sixty-year-old Niranjan Pradhan is perhaps the man who has been convicted by any court in this country in the shortest possible time. Niranjan had raped a seven-year-old schoolgirl in Bhubaneswar on September 3.
The trial began on September 18 in a sessions court in the city. After only six days of the first hearing and with just four hearings in total, Niranjan was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.
Khurda Superintendent of Police, Amitabh Thakur, said "This is a historic judgment not only for its quick verdict, but also it will give a message to potential criminals who take the law for granted because of the delay in justice delivery."
With timely co-operation from 12 witnesses, the judge was quick to deliver justice.
Even the defense lawyer, Ziaul Haque, had nothing to complain on the manner in which the hearing was conducted.
"I have no complaints against anybody because the witnesses were properly examined and it was not proper to drag the case," said Haque.
The girl's mother, Purnima Nayak, who works as a labourer, can hardly believe that they have got justice so fast.
"We are poor and we knew that it takes years to get justice once a case starts. But we are happy to get justice so soon. We are thankful to those who made this possible," she said.
This historic verdict after just nineteen days of the incident has proved that our judiciary system has the potential to deliver speedy justice, provided it gets the necessary support.
