HYDERABAD/TUNI: AntiCorruption Bureau sleuths raided a checkpost of the Road Transport Authority atTetagunta in East Godavari district on the national highway between Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam on Monday and seized more than Rs 5 lakh from the staff there.
The money is said to have been collected by the RTA officials illegally from drivers and owners of vehicles, ACB officials said. ``During the check it was found that the officials were engaging private persons in abuse of their official position and were resorting to collection of money illegally from drivers and owners of vehicles passing through the checkpost. They were not collecting taxes or fines as per rules or laws and were causing losses to the government exchequer,'' an ACB statement said.An amount of Rs 5.14 lakh was seized from the premises of the checkpost as well as from the private agents employed by the officials.

Under the aegis of Visakhapatnam ACB deputy superintendent of police Ramakrishna Prasad, inspectors Nageswara Rao of Kakinada, Ramakrishna of Rajahmundry and others participated in the raids. ACB registered cases against motor vehicle inspectors Suresh and Sampat Kumar.

A few days ago the office of deputy commissioner of transport department at Kakinada was also raided and Rs 1.50 lakh in cash was seized from the office.

The assistant engineer, L Sreenu alias Srinivas, working at Angadipeta in PA Pally mandal in Nalgonda district, was caught on a road near his office when he took Rs 5,000 as bribe from a person to release a transformer and other material to provide connection to the latter's agricultural land.
