An Indian student shamed a woman as a “diversity hire” on LinkedIn only to face her as his interviewer later. The student was “scared as hell” when he realised that the very woman he belittled on the business and employment-focused social media platform was his interviewer. An IITian, who is a friend of the interviewer, shared this story of how “karma bites you back in ways you can’t even fathom” on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“One of my female friends working at a startup, got a message on Linkedin a few weeks back from a college kid asking for a referral for an SDE-1 opening, she didn’t find the resume good enough & asked him to improve it further before applying,” Pranav Mehta wrote on the microblogging platform.
The IITian, who is a former Microsoft employee, further added how the student mocked his friend: “This guy started belittling and shaming her for being a ‘diversity hire’, and that she wasn’t capable of advising him.”
Although the student got a referral for a role at a product-based company, he was shocked to the core when he found out about the interviewer. It was the same woman he accused of being a “diversity hire” on LinkedIn.

The story is all over the Internet with many sharing their thoughts on it. “Regardless of gender, etc., it’s utterly stupid to unprovokedly insult a senior employee of a company you want to work in. Even if you get hired you’re starting off with a beef with a senior employee. Also, if the woman knew what kind of personality this person is, it could have 100% affected the decision and it wouldn’t even been unfair. There is usually a ‘red flag’ category in interviews that is about candidate behaviour. Even getting aggresively rude in the interview can land you there. It basically means ‘may not be someone we would want to work with’,” said an individual.
“It’s a small world. I’ve seen similar instances happen time and again,” said another.
A third posted, “Oh damn. Tell us more.”
‘What happened at the end? Did he make it through that round or not?” asked one curious X user.
A fifth Internet user expressed, “Even though diversity hiring exists if you are good, ain’t nothing gonna stop you from getting hired. So, instead of crying, people should actually just upskill.”
