BANGALORE: Baldwin Women’s Methodist College, as promoters of quality education, have taken up the immeasurable task of gathering girl children and young women into its fold and inculcating in them interminable values coupled with academic excellence to enable them to face their future. Shaila John Samuel, administrator, Baldwin Group of Institutions speaks to City Express about the values they inculcate in girls and women through their education institutions.Can you give a brief background about the growth of Baldwin Group of Institutions? The Baldwin school for girls was established in 1903 and continues to provide quality education to girls in Bangalore. By the year 1990, the need was felt for good post-schooling education for women and the PUC section emerged. This was expanded with the addition of the Degree section in 1995. The Baldwin Women’s Methodist College is managed by the Methodist Church in India with the Rt Rev Dr Taranath Sagar, Bishop of the South India Regional Conference as the Chairman of its Board.What is the main mission of your institutions?Our Mission is to empower young women with excellent education and integrated character formation to impact the family, community and the nation.What are the courses offered?The Pre-University course approved by the Karnataka Government, comes directly under the purview of the Pre-University Education Board of Karnataka State. The courses offered in PUC section are Science, Commerce and Arts. The degree is affiliated to the Bangalore University and recognised by Government of Karnataka. The degree section boasts of fine job oriented courses namely BCom, BBM, BA, BCA and BSc (FAD).According to you, what differentiates your institution from others?To keep pace with the current education scenario and the aspirations of the student community, the various departments of the college organise a plethora of activities. It is the earnest attempt of each department to provide a platform for pragmatic exchange of knowledge. Students are encouraged to participate in seminars, workshops, presentations, conferences and exhibitions to bring out their potential and equip them to face the challenges of the fast paced job scenario today.The aim is to create an environment wherein students shall cultivate a love for learning, respect for all life, tolerance for all religions and communities and thereby emerge with wholly developed personalities.The faculty of forty plus is the forte of the college. Lecturers go beyond the boundaries of classroom defined ‘line of control’ and plan workshops, seminars, educational and industrial tours to places of interest and learning. Value Education classes are held at all levels in the college. Other than education, what are the activities promoted in your institutions?A celebration of cultural and literary expression is organised annually. It includes contests in creative writing, debate, classical and folk music and dance — both Indian and Western — to name a few. A host of such exciting events spiral and culminate in its inter-collegiate bonanza Manthan. Manthan is a cauldron of opportunities through which students develop leadership qualities, organisational skills and interpersonal relationship, building cordial ties between colleges. We also have the Baldwin Rotaract Club, the aim of which is to inculcate the spirit of sharing and interacting, improving the club activities, taking up community development projects and building international relationships.The college also boasts of more than 60 cadets under the purview of 7 Karnataka Battalion Army wing with Associate NCC Officer. Games and Sports are compulsory for all students. Students are encouraged to participate in intercollegiate, district and state level competitions. How strong is your placement cell?The Career and Placement cell provides a range of academic support service to enhance students with skills and job opportunities.
