New Delhi: The tale of the Bentley car that Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh is said to have gifted to actor Abhishek Bachchan on his birthday is getting more and more curious after it was revealed that the car has been registered in the name of Amar Singh, who has shown his residential address as 'Jalsa' in Mumbai.
'Jalsa' is the Mumbai address of the Big B.
The Delhi transport authorities now say it is for Mumbai transport authorities to probe the alleged misleading address given by the Samajwadi Party leader in the documents pertaining to the import of the Rs 1.7-crore car.
The expensive present has sent a rumble of controversy speeding through the capital since its arrival.
On Wednesday, as newspapers flashed the picture of Big B and Amar Singh posing alongside the car, the Delhi Government said it would probe the alleged problem with the address in documents pertaining to the import of the car.
A day later the Delhi authorities, however, piped down on the issue, saying it is for Mumbai transport authorities to do so.
"As per Section 34 of the Motor Vehicle Act, we had issued temporary registration to the luxury car, which Amar Singh claimed to have purchased for his use after paying all customs duties. The responsibility to verify the residence address of the owner lies on Mumbai RTO office, which will give the permanent license to the vehicle user," PTI quoted Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf as saying.
Yusuf regretted the fact that Amar Singh is now trying to make it a political issue by threatening to take legal action against the Delhi Transport Department.
On Wednesday, Yusuf had said that information given in the documents submitted by Singh will be probed and action would be taken depending on the findings.
Amar Singh claims he has imported the car from London by paying hundred per cent custom duty and that he had been using 'Jalsa', the Mumbai residence of the Bachchans, "as my house whenever I am in Mumbai."
