Seattle: Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled a holographic lens device that allows users to see three-dimensional renderings of computer-generated images.

The device, called Microsoft HoloLens, has no wires and looks like a visor. The HoloLens is worn over the eyes like virtual reality headsets. While it's unclear when it might be available for sale.

A Microsoft engineer showed how it could be used to view and edit three-dimensional renderings of people, machines or other objects.

It ups the stakes in the emerging market for virtual reality, being targeted by Facebook's Oculus.

The new gadget runs on the newest version of Microsoft's flagship operating system, Windows 10, which the company says is designed to provide a more familiar experience as users shift back and forth between personal computers to tablets, smartphones and other devices, including gaming consoles.

Microsoft HoloLens allows you to view holograms in high definition and hear them in surround sound, even if they are behind you. And with advanced sensors, Microsoft HoloLens can see what you are looking at and understand what you are communicating with your hands and voice.

"By putting you at the centre of the Windows 10 computing experience, Microsoft HoloLens allows you to create, access information, enjoy entertainment, and communicate in new and exciting ways," said Terry Myerson, Microsoft's head of operating systems, in a blog post.

The device will be available around the same time as Windows 10 this autumn, a Microsoft executive said at a presentation at Microsoft's headquarters near Seattle.
