THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Around 79 schools in Kodungalloor constituency will set a first-of-its-kind model for infrastructure and academic development in schools under the ambitious project Aksharam. The Education Department, with the ample support of the MLA of Kodungalloor constituency, T N Prathapan, has launched the comprehensive school development plan, the first phase of which is expected to be completed in March 2012.  Aksharam is aimed at making the schools eco-friendly, build toilets, streamline the noon-meal programme, complete electrification, provide telephone connection, create herbal gardens, improve labs, build libraries, provide Internet connection, give ICT training and in total make government schools overcome their shortcomings.  The Project Report of Aksharam, prepared by State Institute of Educational Management and Training (SIEMAT)-Kerala, DIET Thrissur and SSA Thrissur, details the objectives of Aksharam. ``It is the first time that a constituency-oriented programme is being envisaged in schools. The MLA was so much behind the initiative that besides the government, SSA and other agency funds, MLA fund would also be utilised,” said SIEMAT Director E Valsalakumar. According to officials, the project would see a coming together of Education and LSG Departments in a concerted manner. The panchayats would provide vehicles to bring special children to school. The project expects to garner support from SCERT, SSA, IT@School, SIET, RMSA, Social Welfare Department and VHSE in its implementation.  In the initial phase, one school from panchayat/municipality-level would be chosen to become model schools. The teachers in the schools would be imparted training in English language and orientation in communicative English for LP/UP teachers. Counselling centres would be opened in the schools and in Plus-II schools, career guidance cells would be started. The production training centres in VHSE would be improved.  The project says that Akash economical laptops would be distributed to eighth standard and Plus-I students. In the to-be-opened CCET centre at Kodungalloor, orientation courses for civil service would be given. According to officials, the project is expected to prove an inspiration for other constituencies too. Already, MLAs Sreeramakrishnan (Ponnani), V D Satheeshan (North Parur), K M Shaji (Azhikode), M Hamsa (Ottapalam) and Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed (Nilambur) have expressed interest in implementing Aksharam in their respective constituencies.
