A Somalian man strangled to death his heavily pregnant Swedish girlfriend in a suspected case of honour killing, Swedish police officials told news outlets. The man, who remains unnamed, killed Swede Saga Forsgren Elneborg because he was too ashamed to introduce her to his Muslim family, prosecutors have alleged.

She was found dead at her home in the Swedish city of Örebro on April 28 last year and was 20 years old and seven months pregnant when she was strangled to death possibly with a lamp cord. Her unborn child died in her womb. The man has been identified as Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim on social media outlets by some accounts that focus on crime news. CNN-News18 could not independently verify the name of the Somali man.
The accused, her boyfriend, was charged with her murder last week. He was not charged over the death of their unborn son. The unborn child weighed almost 1.8 kilos and measured 1.5ft from head to toe.
The Swedish police officials released a 1,000-page dossier which contained photographs of the crime scene – her bedroom, and the lamp cord, which they are suspecting to be the murder weapon.
Prosecutors alleged the man grew up in a home where dating a “white” woman is “not okay” and believed that they should date a woman of the same culture. It is said he hid his two-year relationship with Saga as his family would not accept it.
“[Saga’s boyfriend] has killed Saga Forsgren Elneborg by suffocating and strangling her by means of pressure on her neck with an impact on the trachea and the blood supply to the head,” Elisabeth Anderson, the prosecutor, was quoted as saying by The Sun and Aftonbladet.
“The murder took place in an honour context because the man wanted to preserve or restore his and his family’s honour by killing the woman who was carrying his child,” she further added.
The text messages exchanged between the couple shows him telling Saga would reveal their relationship and break the news of her pregnancy to his family.
“Feels like I can almost feel my heartbeat all the way down to my stomach,” Saga said in an SMS in a bid to reassure him. Prosecutors also said that some of the messages she sent him on the night she was murdered went unanswered.
Swedish media outlets said there is no evidence suggesting his family was either involved in the killing or that they asked for it.
Text messages seen by the prosecutors show that the suspect suggested Saga to get an abortion. “I know we can make it, but I won’t be able to keep my family. If it had been possible, there would have been no problem with keeping the child,” he told her.
“She was so happy. She would move to a new apartment and start her life as a mother. This is the worst thing imaginable,” Nerikes Allehanda, Saga’s mother, was quoted as saying by Swedish news agencies. She said her daughter was excited about becoming a mother.
She clicked selfies of her baby bump and bought a crib, toys and clothes for her unborn child.
The suspect has denied any wrongdoing and will go on trial on April 15. The trial will last at least 15 days.
