Once upon a time, boasting about Bengaluru’s perfect weather was a local tradition. With just a fan, you could cool off in the city’s naturally pleasant climate. Fast forward to today, a heatwave has taken the Karnataka capital by surprise, leaving locals scrambling for something they never thought they’d need: air conditioning.
Social media platforms like ‘X’ are buzzing with complaints from locals who never imagined needing an AC in Bengaluru. “Never in my 20 years in Bangalore, I ever thought we would need an AC…Bangaloreans can no longer play the “ weather” card. What is this heat even? It’s as if I’m staying in Rajasthan,” lamented one resident. Another admitted, “Never imagined that I would install an #AC in #Bangalore, but here we are.”

Never felt the need for buying an AC in Bangalore but here we are. Thanks to the scorching heat. Never seen summers like this in Bangalore.— Social Experiment (@GoneWorse) April 30, 2024
Amidst the frustration, humour hasn’t deserted Bengaluru. One witty commenter joked, “As a bangalore boy, not buying an AC just because of ego issues at this point.” Another quipped, “Want to be as optimistic as the Bangalore builders who just knew “Bangalore ka weather hamesha accha hoga” so decided not to keep AC points in bedrooms…so that we can suffer in the heat.”

And yet another tried to justify their AC usage by saying, “Trying to rationalise electricity usage for AC by saying I no longer need the water heater for hot showers.”

Setting jokes aside, Bengaluru is currently experiencing scorching, almost heatwave-like conditions. The situation escalated on Sunday when the city recorded its second-highest temperature ever at 38.5°C, just 0.7°C shy of the all-time record set in 2016.

This departure from Bengaluru’s usual pleasant weather is part of an ongoing heatwave in Karnataka. The heatwave has gripped much of the state, with districts like Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, and Raichur also experiencing intense heat. Despite a slight dip in Kalaburgi to 40.5°C, it remains the hottest region in Karnataka.
