It’s not every day you expect to see an auto rickshaw or tuk-tuk navigating the streets of California, USA. However, that’s exactly what caught the attention of surprised onlookers in the Artesia area. The distinctive black and yellow vehicle, typically seen in bustling streets in India, made an unexpected appearance.
According to a social media user, this auto rickshaw is a familiar sight parked outside the Pioneer Cash and Carry store on Pioneer Boulevard, also known as Little India. What adds to the intrigue is that on weekends, it offers free rides allowing residents to enjoy short scenic trips in designated areas. The clip capturing this unusual sighting quickly gained traction on Instagram with over 8 lakh views.
The short video captures the auto-rickshaw roaming in the streets of California. Riding in an auto rickshaw is an adventure in itself, with its open sides providing a unique and immersive view of the cityscape. For international tourists, it presents an opportunity to dive into the local way of life. However, in the United States, practical considerations such as the absence of seatbelts and air conditioning might make it less feasible as a primary mode of transport. Sharing the video on Instagram, the content creator wrote, “Auto Rikshaw in California.”
Reacting to the clip, a user wrote, “Much needed public transport in the US.”
An individual joked, “Wow USA is being converted to India.”
One more added, “Wo bhi din dur nahi jab har jagah rickshaws dikhenge (The day is not far when rickshaws will be seen everywhere).”
“How did I miss this,” a person commented on the post.
In a bid to offer tourists a unique and lively experience on three wheels, a San Francisco-based company has rolled out electric tuk-tuks that redefine the concept of transportation. These vehicles are not merely modes of getting around; they serve as vibrant entertainment hubs featuring disco balls, colourful seats and even karaoke machines. According to Brian Huber, the CEO of Lucky Tuk Tuk, the city’s hilly terrain serves as a natural advantage for these electric tuk tuks. As they descend the slopes, the vehicles can recharge. Reportedly, the company provides 2.5-hour tours of popular tourist spots like Russian Hill and Lombard Street along with pub hopping in the evening. Tour prices are between $65 to $118 (approximately Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000), depending on the chosen tour and season.
