Fed Up With Delay, Man Plants Banana Tree In Pothole To Get Officials' Attention
A Malaysian man recently planted a banana tree inside a pothole to draw the attention of the authorities.

Round-shaped big and small holes, also known as potholes, are quite common in every part of the world. Said to be one of the major hurdles on roads, they can not only lead to serious accidents but also deteriorate the condition of pavements, raising questions regarding road maintenance. Whether it is a rural, suburban, or urban area, one can see potholes almost everywhere, and it causes a number of problems for people, especially drivers. While people usually ignore such things, a Malaysian man seemingly fed up with potholes on the road, decided to plant a banana tree inside it, thus drawing the attention of the authorities.

According to The Independent report, Mahathir Aripin from Jalan Sandakan-Lahad Datu in the Sabah region of the country was frustrated over the lack of action from officials regarding potholes and this is when he decided to adopt a unique approach.

He planted a banana tree in the middle of the road and later also posted a picture on his Facebook page, showing the tree standing tall in the hole, covered with soil. The report further mentions that the pothole’s location was approximately 500 m from the spot where an accident recently took place, leading to the death of a 4-year-old.

Along with the picture, he also posted the message a message stating that he will use tar next time. “I feel sorry for the road users. I’ll cover it with tar next time," he wrote on Facebook.

While the post grabbed a lot of attention on social media, it eventually also prompted authorities to act immediately. The Sabah Public Works Department took quick action and arrived at the location to fix the road. While reports suggest that the road was repaired within hours of the man’s social media post, the local authorities claim that the repair work was being delayed due to continuous rain in the particular region.

This is not the first time that such a step has been taken by the locals to draw the authorities’ attention toward unrepaired potholes. Earlier in 2021, two residents of Malaysia’s Kulim district also planted banana trees into potholes that were not fixed for 2 years.

In another incident, a man fed up with the poor conditions of the road near his Southwest Florida business also carried out a similar action by planting a tree in a pothole along the Honda Drive just off the U.S. 41 in South Fort Myers.
