If you ever wondered how the OnePlus devices managed to offer everything that the flagship smartphones of other OEMs offer at a much more pocket-friendly price, well, they don’t. A recent such example has surfaced on the OnePlus forum wherein one of the OnePlus 5T users has revealed that the smartphone is unable to stream HD videos of popular video streaming apps such as Google Play Movies, Amazon Prime Videos and Netflix.
On the forum, user ‘whatthefunk’ pointed out how the latest OnePlus flagship skips out on the required certification to stream DRM-protected high definition content on these apps. While the OnePlus 5T supports level 3 Widevine certification, most of the video-streaming services use Widevine level 1 certification for protected HD content. The lack of the level 1 certification is the reason behind the OnePlus devices, including the OnePlus 5, not being able to play HD content on the video-streaming services. The YouTube app is, however, not affected by this and is able to play HD content on the smartphones.
Termed as ‘flagship killer’ devices, the OnePlus smartphones not being able to play HD content despite having the Hardware capability along with the Full HD display comes as a shock. Especially due to the fact that it wouldn’t have cost OnePlus anything extra to include the support for the HD content as the Widevine website mentions “Google does not assess license fees for the Widevine product." Though as a ray of hope, the OnePlus team has recently released a statement promising the update for the same in the near future. No timeline for the update has been provided as of now though.
