Telangana Governor and Puducherry Lieutenant-Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday resigned from both posts, sources informed. It has been learnt that the BJP Tamil Nadu leader Soundararajan is likely to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
According to BJP sources, the 62-year-old leader is likely to contest the high-stakes polls from Chennai South constituency in Tamil Nadu.
Soundararajan was sworn in as the then-fledgling Telangana state’s second Governor in November 2019 and was given additional charge as lieutenant governor of Puducherry in February 2021.
The Telangana Governor’s resignation comes on the same day as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public address in the state at Jagital.
According to an NDTV report, Soundararajan contested the Lok Sabha election in 2019 from Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi seat, which the ruling DMK’s Kanimozhi currently holds.
In 2009, she contested the Chennai (North) seat and lost it to TKS Elangovan of the DMK.
Soundararajan has also contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly thrice – from Radhapuram in 2006, Velachery in 2011, and Virugampakkam in 2016 and lost all three elections.
The chatter about the possibility of the Telangana Governor fighting the elections comes a day after the Election Commission of India on Saturday announced the schedule for the polls, which will be held in seven phases.
The counting of votes will take place on June 4.
The elections will be held in seven phases, with first on April 19, second on April 26, third on May 7, fourth on May 13, fifth on May 20, sixth on May 25 and seventh on June 1.
