Cong returns BJP fire, calls Advani 'low purush'
Cong says PM is standing very strongly, unflinching, totally devoted to his duties.

New Delhi: Rejecting the BJP charge that Manmohan Singh was a weak Prime Minister, the Congress on Wednesday hit back at the saffron party, saying Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani were 'disappointed and disillusioned leaders'.

Coming out in full support of Singh and seeking to scotch speculation that he was contemplating resignation, the Congress said he was "standing very strongly, unflinching, totally devoted to his duties."

AICC spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan told reporters here the government, the party and the allies are with him.

"The Indian National Congress and UPA allies stand like a rock behind the Prime Minister," she said.

"It is the BJP which is a sad and defeated party and Vajpayee and Advani, the 'Vikas Purush' and 'Loh Purush', who are disappointed and disillusioned leaders," she said.

Natarajan said in the ongoing battle for supremacy between Vajpayee and Advani, the former always used the threat to quit as his best weapon.

She also took potshots at Advani, saying he was not 'Loh Purush' as his party described him but a ‘Low Purush'.

Noting that Vajpayee had said in 2001 that he had decided to resign as he could not manage the NDA, she said this had brought Parliament to a standstill and thrown the nation into confusion.

"He had also said he was unable to function in a coherent and disciplined manner and wanted to quit," she said.

"So it was Vajpayee who was a sad and defeated Prime Minister and not Manmohan Singh who has led the country with great distinction," Natarajan said.
