'It Was a Big Yes': Ishan Kishan Reveals he Gleefully Accepted to Open in Asia Cup Final, Thanks Rohit Sharma for the Chance
Ishan Kishan scored an unbeaten 23 off 18 with the help of three fours as India chased down 51 in 6.1 overs.

In a lopsided final, India bossed over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 title clash in Colombo on Sunday. Sri Lanka produced a horror show after opting to bat first as they were reduced to 12/6 in just 5.4 overs with Mohammed Siraj producing a fast bowling spell for the ages.

Somehow, Sri Lanka managed to avoid the ignominy of being bowled for the lowest ODI total in history and dragged themselves to 50 before being skilled in just 15.2 overs.

The demolition job was triggered by Jasprit Bumrah who had Sri Lanka opener Kusal Perera caught behind for a two-ball duck in the very first over. And then Siraj took it to another level with a four-wicket over and he eventually finished with a six-fer.

“The bowlers were on point today,” Ishan Kishan said after the match. “I would like to give credit to bowlers. Siraj was exceptional.”

With a small target of 51, India captain Rohit Sharma didn’t open alongside Shubman Gill and instead, Ishan was sent out by their team management.

Ishan and Gill wasted no time as the pair took India home in just 6.1 overs to seal a dominating 10-wicket win.

Ishan says he likes opening and he was quite pleased when the offer to kickstart the chase was made to him during the innings break.

“It’s not easy to bat in the second innings. We were prepared for any challenge. I always love to open, the total wasn’t much, so it was a big yes from my side (when asked to open),” Ishan said.

While acknowledging there was little challenge in chasing 51 runs, Ishan did thank his skipper for giving him the opportunity to open.

“Can’t do much when you have only 50 runs on the board. But thanks to the skipper,” he said.

Ishan said the players are aware of their role going into the ICC ODI World Cup and he will be batting in the middle order.

“We know our roles, we know how to prepare for the World Cup. We are playing against Australia, and I will be batting in the middle-order,” he said.
