Cold Wave To Intensify This Week, IMD Predicts Rainfall in UP, Bihar, Kerala, TN & Other States | Weather Updates
The weather department predicts dense to severe cold days for states like Odisha, Sikkim, West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya till January 7

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted a cold wave for northern and central parts of India between January 5 and 11 while some northeastern states will experience rainfall.

Temperatures in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand are likely to drop further in view of possible light rainfall till January 5.

IMD Director General Dr Mrutynjay Mohapatra said day temperature will be below normal leading to cold day conditions, especially in Madhya Pradesh, northern parts of Maharashtra, southern parts of Uttar Pradesh, and areas of Haryana and Rajasthan

“From 5th to 11th January, we are expecting night temperature to fall, which may lead to cold wave conditions in some parts of central India,” news agency ANI quoted Mohapatra as saying.

  • States like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu, and Kashmir are very likely to experience dense fog followed by cold days till January 7.
  • Mohapatra said that there was also a low-pressure area forming over the southeast Arabian Sea leading to clouds over areas in Lakshadweep and Maldives.
  • The weather department predicts dense to severe cold days for states like Odisha, Sikkim, West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya till January 7.
  • Cold wave conditions prevailed in Kashmir valley with the minimum temperature remaining below the freezing point, the weather office said. A thin layer of ice has formed over the surface of the Dal Lake as the minimum temperature in Srinagar on Monday night was minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, officials said.
  • Under the influence of an easterly wave and the above low-pressure area, light to moderate rainfall is expected over south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala till January 6.
  • Lakshadweep is likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers till January 6.
  • States like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha can witness light rainfall till January 5.
  • No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over east India till January 4 with a rise by 2-3°C thereafter.
  • Rise by 2-3°C in minimum temperatures likely over central India during the next 3 days and no significant weather change thereafter.
  • IMD suggests fishermen not to venture into the sea as strong winds up to 40-50 kmph are likely over the Bay of Bengal off the south Sri Lanka coast, southwest Arabian Sea, adjoining Lakshadweep because of low-pressure area.
  • Mohapatra said 2023 was the second warmest year since 1901 as the annual mean air temperature for the country was 0.65 degrees Celsius above normal. The warmest year since 1901 was 2016 when the annual mean air temperature for the country was 0.710 degrees Celsius above normal.
