Ex-Bhutanese army officer and actor Sangay Tsheltrim recently featured in Shah Rukh Khan’s much-hyped movie Jawan in a pivotal role. In a recent interview, he recalled how he had earlier rejected the project due to scheduling conflicts, but later decided to sign the “very important” movie. Sangay also spoke about his experience of working with Shah Rukh Khan and recalled how the superstar thanked him for accepting the role.
Talking to ETimes, Sangay shared that when he was first approached by Mukesh Chhabra’s casting company for the role, he rejected it initially because he had already given his dates to a Bhutanese film. However, the actor was convinced when the film’s assistant director called him the next day to explain his part in detail.
Sangay also recalled his first time meeting Shah Rukh Khan on the sets of Jawan in September 2021. He said, “The moment he saw me, he shook my hand, gave me a hug, and said, ‘Sangay, Welcome on board and thank you very much for accepting the role.’ That really touched my heart.”
The actor mentioned that Shah Rukh is not only a good teacher but also a perceptive learner. Sangay said that Shah Rukh teaches others what he knows, and learns what he doesn’t know from others who are better than him. “He is a good learner. I’ve seen Vijay Sethupathi suggesting some scenes to sir, and he took that,” he said.
Sangay has formerly served in the Royal Bhutan Army and as such, is skilled in many forms of combat like MMA, boxing and karate among others. In the interview, the actor was asked about his opinion on Shah Rukh’s action scenes in Jawan. Sangay said, “I saw those action scenes that he has done, and for his age, he is very good with it… Shah Rukh sir is just a fabulous actor.”
However, he maintained that action in films is very different from action in real life and Shah Rukh is more experienced than him in the former kind.
Sangay has previously worked with another Bollywood superstar – Salman Khan. He appeared in Salman’s 2021 film Radhe. He said that the people of Bhutan love the two superstars and await their visit to their country. “Now that I’m working with them, I’ve got a lot of pressure from the citizens of Bhutan,” he said.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan was released in theatres amid much anticipation on Thursday. The Atlee directorial also features stellar performances by Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Sanya Malhotra and Priyamani among others. Deepika Padukone also has an extended appearance in the film.
