Bollywood is all set to spoil us this summer with some very interesting films. From Aanand L Rai's 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' to Shoojit Sircar's 'Piku' to Zoya Akhtar's 'Dil Dhadakne Do' the coming months of May and June are lined up with multi-starrer big budget films which have rather different story lines.
Perhaps cashing on the two summer months when most schools across the country are shut for summer holidays, filmmakers have queued up films which have the ability to become blockbuster hits. And the viewers are not complaining at all! A quirky romantic tale, a slice-of-life film, a film set in the bygone era and a ensemble film will be jostling with each other in coming two months to create a space at the Box Office and we as viweres are spolit for choice.
So here it is; four films that will scorch the screen this summer.
Piku: Father-daughter relationships have often been explored on the big screen. But how often have you heard two mainstream actors discussing bowel movements with absolute nonchalance on the big screen. Amitabh Bachchan plays father to Deepika Padukone in Shoojit Sircar's 'Piku'- a quirky slice-of-life film with Irrfan Khan playing the third wheel in this film about the father-daughter duo. The film's trailer instantly puts a smile on your face because of its realistic approach. Shot in Delhi and Kolkata, the film promises to be a typical Shoojit Sircar comedy which the audience loved in 'Vicky Donor'. The film releases in theaters on 8th May.
Bombay Velvet: Anurag Kashyap's 60s drama set in Bombay now Mumbai has been in the making for quite sometime now. From going over budget to delaying the film's release by almost six months, Kashyap's film got a lot of negative publicity even before the film's trailer was out. But the trailer shut every one up nicely. Ranbir's effervescent charm as the street fighter, Anushka Sharma's subtle beauty and a vintage Bombay made the film look grand. But we were most excited to see Karan Johar in a rather sly negative role. His character is the one we are most excited about. Of course with dollops of Anurag Kashyap style mayhem on screen and fierce gun battles Tarrantino style, 'Bombay Velvet' promises to be a visual extravaganza. The film releases in theaters on 15th May.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns: The first time round Tanu and Manu burst on the screen with their crazy love story, the audience fell in love with them and now director Aanand L Rai has added a rather rustic Haryanvi twist to their story in the sequel. Featuring R Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut in a double role- the film takes off where 'Tanu Weds Manu' had ended. Kangana last year made us fall in love with her in 'Queen' and looks like she will mesmerize us all again with her new avatar- Kusum Sanghwan. Quite honestly, we can't wait to watch her magic unfold on the big screen on 22 May.
Dil Dhadakne Do: Zoya Akhtar manages to get five big stars to play key roles in her ensemble film about a dysfunctional Punjabi family vacationing on a cruise ship in her film 'Dil Dhadakne Do' and we aren't complaining one bit about it. There is so much to look forward to in the film- Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh playing siblings, Anil Kapoor playing the patriarch and of course Ranveer uniting onscreen with his former girlfriend Anushka Sharma. Beside Akhtar's signature style is evident even in the trailer. Beautiful locales, a peak into the lives of rich and and quirky characters makes this film one of the most anticipated release of this year. The cruise begins on 5th June at a theater near you.
Special mention for ABCD 2: Remo D'Souza's first film on dance featured a bunch reality show winners. The sequel this time will have some of the original cast along with Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor who play the lead. Both these young actors are currently on a career high with their film 'Badlapur' and 'Haider' doing well critically as well as commercially. Both have been lauded for taking brave choices as far as films are concerned so we are hopeful that the dance based film will be one exciting ride for their fans. The trailer isn't out yet but it has already started making all the right noises. The film will be releasing in theaters on 19th June.
