Not Trisha, But This Actress Was The First Choice For Thalapathy Vijay's Ghilli
A re-mastered 4K version of the film was re-released in theatres worldwide on April 20 this year.

When the blockbuster film Leo was released last year, the chemistry between Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan reminded audiences of their last film together, Ghilli, which was released 20 years ago. Ghilli was an engrossing sports action film, a remake of Mahesh Babu’s Telugu film Okkadu. A re-mastered 4K version of the film was re-released in theatres worldwide on April 20 this year and garnered a tremendous response from audiences. It has grossed approximately Rs 30–50 crore during its re-release, surpassing Titanic to become the highest-grossing re-release in Indian cinema.

Although the pairing of Vijay and Trisha is now considered iconic, do you know that Trisha was not the first choice for the film? After Ghilli was re-released in theatres in April, many stars of the Tamil industry talked about 20 years of the cult classic in interviews. Actress Kiran Rathod, while praising the film, revealed that she was the first one approached to play the female lead in the film. Kiran said that at the time Ghilli was offered to her, she was madly in love with someone outside the industry, which influenced her decisions a lot. She had, thus, turned down the film offer from director Dharani and Trisha was cast instead. She also said that after Ghilli became a blockbuster, she regretted her decision not to do the film.

Actress Kiran gained prominence in Tamil cinema with her role in the 2002 film Gemini, alongside Vikram. Following this, she appeared in films such as Villain and Kamal Haasan’s Anbe Sivam. Kiran quickly became recognized as an attractive lead actress, receiving numerous film offers during that period. Her stint as a lead actress did not last long and she soon switched over to supporting roles.

On the other hand, it has also been reported that Ajith Kumar was in talks with director Dharani to star in the film in the initial phases but he ultimately did not take up the offer because he did not want to star in a remake of a Telugu film.
