Matt Reeves On Why Batman Didn’t Feature In Penguin Series: ‘He Could Mess The Narrative’
Matt Reeves explained that they wanted to focus on Colin Farrell’s titular character, Penguin, and others without relying heavily on Batman.

The Batman, featuring Robert Pattinson as the iconic Bruce Wayne, showcased the superhero’s impressive detective skills. Directed by Matt Reeves, the film was praised for its detailed world-building and complex characters, which are further explored in the new Penguin series featuring Colin Farrell. Although the series is set in the same universe, the creators have clarified that it won’t include Pattinson’s Dark Knight. In an interview with TV Insider, Reeves explained that they wanted to focus on Oswald Cobblepot, aka Penguin, and other characters without relying heavily on Batman. According to the filmmaker, Pattinson’s appearance might overshadow Cobblepot’s presence in Gotham.

Reeves stated, “We did talk about doing it, but the thing is it needed to be earned. What was really compelling about doing this [series] is that it represents a point of view shift. You know we’re in the world of The Batman, and it has a very specific feel. And so when we come here, we’re suddenly in the point of view of Oz and the characters that you meet here. Batman is such a powerful figure that if he comes in, he could mess the narrative in a way. It would suddenly, in a sense, be taken over by Batman. We wanted this to be Oz’s moment and let this story be told, to see the story of him having his rise.”

According to executive producer Dylan Clark, there is still a strong link between The Penguin series and The Batman film. He explained that the dark and stylish vibe introduced in the film is present in the series.

The Penguin series begins just one week after the events of The Batman movie and will help pave the way for the sequel. It may even include the Joker, played by Barry Keoghan, who made a brief appearance in the film’s end credits scene. In the new series, Oswald Cobblepot is on a mission to take control of Gotham’s criminal underworld following the death of Carmine Falcone.

Apart from Colin Farrell, the eight-part series also stars Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen, among others.
