Shweta Tripathi, made heads turn with her impactful role in Neeraj Ghaywan's Masaan last year, is all set to venture into web. The actress is about to feature in an all women road drama The Trip. The show is about four women going for a bachelorette trip to Thailand which in turn put their friendship on test. The show is a new and fresh take on friendship and self-discovery.
In an exclusive interview, Shweta told News18 about her excitement to work in a new age show, "The Trip is a show which is better watched online to get the real essence. The moment I heard about the concept I was excited. I had a full cast and crew ready as I was the last person to come onboard for The Trip."
She also listed her reasons for doing TV show after almost 8 years. Shweta was last seen on TV in Disney's Kya Mast Hai Life. About her sort-of 'comeback' she said, "I decided to do the show because firstly, Disney was making it and secondly it was a bachelorette road trip with three other amazing women and I was the bride. There was no reason to skip a show like this!"
The Trip also features Lisa Hayden, Youtube star Mallika Dua and Sapna Pabbi. On working with women, Shweta said, "The entire shooting was filled with madness. We all used to get ready together with music blaring from our vanity vans. It was lovely being with each other and the same experience has been captured in The Trip."
While Bollywood is still apprehensive about showcasing sisterhood in films, Shweta is now part of a movement which kick started in 2015 with Pan Nalin's film Angry Indian Goddesses released last year. "Before joining the show I had my doubts about working in an all women cast because I've had heard things. But as soon as I came on board I realised how much fun it is!"
Talking about her co-stars Shweta says, "I knew I was going to get along with Mallika Dua from the very beginning. I've had a huge girl crush over Lisa Hayden so it was dream come true for. Sapna was this crazy and warm person of the group and together we had a fun-ride while shooting."
The actress made her entry in the industry at changing times. Masaan is considered a pioneer in the new age film movement that focuses more on content than star power. About the current wave of new age cinema , Shweta says, " I think I've been very lucky that I am the part of the industry now. With growing power of digital so many more options are available to the actors nowadays. There are experiments we can do right now which were not possible earlier. "
She further adds, "I remember Nawazzuddin Siddiqui told me one that Talent ko time lagega par wo ubhrega zaroor. " (Recognising talent will take time but it'll definitely get its due soon.) I think time has come for the talent to get recognised."
So how much has changed in one year that she's been in the industry, we ask. Shweta replies all positive, " After Masaan, I feel like I've been accepted in the industry. Before it, I didn't know anybody in Bombay forget Bollywood. I am thankful for all kinds of experience, film industry has given me."
The actress is finally gearing up for the release of her critically acclaimed film Haramkhor. "I am currently super excited for the release of Haramkhor. We are finally getting the clearance from the censor and will announce the release dates soon."
The film has been stuck at the censor board for over an year and also stars Nawazzuddin Siddiqui. Shweta is delighted that the film will finally get a release. She says. ".It feels good to see your hard work being appreciated or at least recognised by all. I can't guarantee if Haramkhor will be a success, I am just happy that people will have an option to either choose or not choose to go for the movie. That's a good enough reason for me to get all excited."
As 2016 is nearing the end, Shweta also revealed the name of her favourite film of the years, "Disney is really close to my heart, thus my favourite film of this year has to be Zootopia."
The actress would be involved in the Hindi dubbed version of the Disney's acclaimed animated movie.
