Chennai: Tributes from celebrities have been pouring in on Wednesday for Carnatic music exponent Balamuralikrishna. He breathed his last on Tuesday at his Chennai home. He was 86.
Paying respect, actor Kamal Haasan said, “He was a rare talent that India can claim as a musician like no other. I believe I do not have the standing to even endeavour to praise his talent. I think we will find it a task to convince the coming generations that such a man did, in fact, live and create music.”
“While there are other musicians and his followers who are better than me, I am proud that I have got a chance to speak about him at this moment. I have been to this house, many times, to get musical wisdom from him. But for paying my respects, nothing strikes me as necessary to say anything more," he added.
Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam said on social media, “ The Avathaara of Maatha Saraswathi concluded. Went back to her Home. I am orphaned yet again (sic).”
KS Chitra said, “ It is with profound sorrow and pain that I heard about the passing away of Guruji Dr. Balamuralikrishna sir in chennai. The world of music is orphaned. India had lost one of her greatest musicians, an ocean of music. May his soul rest in peace. What shall I say than 'entharo mahanubhavalu’ (sic).
Anuradha Sriram, a veteran singer, told CNN News 18, “Anybody who remembers him, remembers him for his charisma. He was a child prodigy and he was an innovator. He found out rare ragas and he was such a genius. He is totally an embodiment of Saraswathi. True to his name, he was Krishna with the kind of enthusiasm he had, the kind of energy he had. He carved a niche for himself.”
“As a child, I used to sing a lot of his songs. Except for the last 2 years, the kind of music that he composed comes to your mind. When you see him, you see Sarasvathi and Krishna. As a child, I participated in many competitions and I remember him giving me prizes. He used to appreciate my performances. I have had the honour of being blessed by him and appreciated by him. Musicians like him are eternal. They are never gone. Whatever they created, they are going to be there forever. His contribution will inspire millions of people again and again and again,” she added.
“In the past two years, he had a problem of remembering things. The song memory was still intact but he was having a lapse of remembering people and events. His health was also not co-operating as much,” she said.
Many celebrities spoke about the legend on social media. Actress Khusbo tweeted, “We hve lost the brightest star of Carnatic world #balamuralikrishna was a rare gem..r treasure..ur music wl continue 2 stir r souls Sir #RIP (sic).” Another popular musician, Anirudh, said on Twitter,” The Legendary Carnatic Musician And Padma Vibhushan #Balamuralikrishna Sir Is No More. #RIPBalamuralikrishna (sic).”
