The veteran actor celebrated his 68th birthday yesterday, February 20. On this special occasion, let’s take a look at Annu Kapoor’s career journey.

As per reports, the actor used to earn his living by selling tea. But his passion for acting took him to the next level. When he played the role of a 70-year-old man at the age of 23, Shyam Benegal also became convinced of his acting and gave him a special role in his classic film Mandi. He is not only a versatile actor in Bollywood but has also won many awards.

Based on this memorable performance, Annu Kapoor started getting work in Bollywood. According to reports, Shyam Benegal also became a fan of his acting. He wrote a letter praising him and signed him for a special role in the memorable 1984 film ‘Mandi’. The movie was based on the classic Urdu short story Aanandi by writer Ghulam Abbas and featured Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, and Naseeruddin Shah in important roles. The movie was a huge success and also won the 1984 National Film Award for Best Art Direction for Nitish Roy.

However, apart from acting, Annu Kapoor also earned a name as a singer, director, radio disc jockey, and television presenter. Annu Kapoor has been working in Bollywood for 40 years. Apart from the National Award, he has also been awarded the Filmfare Award and the Indian Television Academy Award.

Annu Kapoor was born in Itwara, Bhopal, Bhopal State, on February 20, 1956, to Madanlal, a Punjabi father with roots in Peshawar, and Kamal, a Bengali Brahmin mother. His father owned a travelling Parsi theatre company that performed in cities and towns, and his mother was an Urdu teacher and a trained classical singer, yet the condition of the family was not good. Due to poor financial circumstances, he had to quit school following his secondary education. On his father’s insistence, he joined his theatre company. Following a stint there, he joined the National School of Drama in 1976, after his brother Ranjit Kapoor, who was already a student there, insisted.

After graduating from the National School of Drama and a brief stint with its repertory company in 1981, he played a 70-year-old man in the play Ek Ruka Hua Faisla in Bombay. Since then, he has never looked back. He made his screen debut with an uncredited role in the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Kaala Patthar (1979). Some of his popular films include Khandhar, Main Azaad Hoon, Jeena Marna Tere Sang, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, and Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, to name a few.
