BANGALORE: In an example of extreme high handedness, a police inspector was shocked by the way he was treated by his fellow policemen of High Grounds police station when he went to file a complaint against six youth who allegedly manhandled him and snatched his gold chain, a mobile phone and bike key.
Srinivasa Reddy, a police inspector working at the State Crime Records Bureau was himself a victim of police apathy. The incident was reported on May 16 when Reddy was on his way to his office in M S Building. It is said that when the officer was going near Windsor Manor Hotel, he saw a Maruti Zen car being driven recklessly and posing threat to other commuters. This made him stare at the driver who in turn chased Reddy's twowheeler and waylaid his bike. The gang of six members allegedly manhandled Reddy and snatched his gold chain and the mobile phone.

Though Reddy said he was a police inspector, they allegedly abused him and arrogantly told him that he could not do anything to them. They did not stop there and also snatched his bike key. But, Reddy took their car key away from them. When they did not return his key, Reddy called an autorickshaw but the youth threatened the auto driver to not take him and the driver did the same.

According to a source at High Grounds police station, when Reddy came to the station and introduced himself as a police inspector, the Assistant SubInspector Govindaraju asked him not to introduce himself as police inspector, but as a member of the public.

Later, ACP Omkaraiah and Inspector Virupakshappa who came to the station did not exhibit the courtesy of hearing to Reddy allegedly.

Meanwhile, the ASI had collected Reddy's phone number had passed it on to a corporator who in turn called Reddy and pressurised him not to file a complaint as the youth were known to him. Reddy who was already upset by the behaviour of the police shelved his plans of filing a complaint and left the station. "But the youth walked away smiling," the source said adding that the other staff of the station were also shocked to see the plight of Reddy.
