New Delhi: Special Economic Zones (SEZ) are creating a major havoc in West Bengal.

Tension was high in Nandigram, when the mutilated body of a district police officer, Sadhu Chatterjee was found in a sack on the banks of River Haldi, four days after he was killed in a mob attack.

The police officer was attacked and killed last Wednesday by farmers protesting the setting up of a SEZ in Nandigram.

On Wednesday, 50 people were arrested in clashes at Bhowanipur in West Bengal's East Midnapore district. The clash broke out when police tried to stop activists who were protesting against the proposed SEZ in Nandigram.

In Singur too, angry protestors uprooted the fence put up around the site for a proposed Tata Motors car plant.

Local farmers and Trinamool Congress workers are opposing the acquisition of agricultural land for the plant.

Police had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob. The protestors have also started digging up roads to prevent police vehicles from moving in.
