New Delhi: DG Vanzara has reportedly admitted to killing Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi in a fake encounter. According to sources, the senior Gujarat police official and SP Rajkumar Pandian made the confession a statement to the CID.
Quoted sources, PTI said Vanzara has reiterated the long-held government view that Sheikh was killed "because he was a terrorist." As regards Kausar Bi, the two police officials have reportedly claimed that she was killed because she was a witness in the case.
Vanzara and Pandian have since been suspended from service. Vanzara and Pandian and Rajasthan cadre IPS officer MN Dinesh were sent to judicial custody at the end of their 15-day police custody on Tuesday and they are now being lodged at the high-security Sabarmati Central Jail.
The Intelligence Bureau had earlier received information that the IPS officers, particularly Vanzara, faced a threat to their lives from those detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).
Meanwhile, the Rajasthan police have claimed that there was a 'supari' of Rs 6 crore to kill Sheikh. The Rajasthan police, however, have claimed that Sohrabuddin was basically involved in crimes in MP and Gujarat and had found sanctuary in Udaipur.
The Rajasthan police had earlier put a Rs 25,000 reward on Sohrabuddin's head and wanted him for a murder.
Meanwhile, the BJP has rubbished Congress allegations that Vanzara may be killed to foment riots by the BJP government so that it can retain power. Congress has renewed its demand for a CBI probe based on a letter written by Vanzara's elder brother, who said he was fearing for the DIG's life.
Nest week, the Supreme Court will hear a plea to transfer the case to the CBI as three states are involved in it.
