New Delhi: As part of her efforts to make the Ganga rejuvenation programme a mass movement, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti on Thursday sought cooperation of religious leaders in keeping the river clean.

Addressing a panel discussion on 'Save Ganga and Save Himalayas' in New Delhi, Bharati urged religious leaders to hold a national congregation to give a nationwide call for effective public participation in Ganga Rejuvenation programme of the Central government, a statement said.

The minister suggested that this national congregation may adopt an appeal to the people to keep Ganga clean. She also suggested that religious preachers may also be requested to urge the public to keep the river clean at the end of their religious meetings.

The minister is of the opinion that such an appeal will prove out to be very effective at the end of religious congregations, where people turn up in thousands. Bharti's suggestion was well received at the panel discussion where religious leaders from various communities were in attendance.
