Time has passed to decommission dam

KOCHI:CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that time has already passed to decommission the Mullaperiyar dam.Speaking at a meeting held after forming the human wall at Vandiperiyar, he said that scientific studies carried out by experts had made it clear that the dam was weak to resist even mild tremors. Pinarayi demanded that the water level in the Mulaperiyar dam be lowered to 120 ft and, later, a new dam be constructed for the safety of the people living downstream of the dam.He said that even after the Chief Minister and other ministers visited the Prime Minister several times, nothing has turned out in Kerala’s favour. He opined that the decision at the all-party meeting that all politicians in the state should meet the Prime Minister clearly states that all the discussions conducted earlier with the Prime Minister had gone in vain.He assured Tamil Nadu that it would be given some quantity of water even if a new dam is built at Mullaperiyar.
