The move comes after TERI faced criticism for promoting Pachauri who faces charges of sexual harassment.

New Delhi: TERI on Friday replaced the chairman of its governing council after the climate body faced protests for promoting RK Pachauri who is facing charges of sexual assault.

Former Competition Commission chief Ashok Chawla was appointed the new chairman while BV Sreekantan put in his papers.

TERI also official confirmed that executive vice chairman Pachauri, against whom two former woman colleagues have raised allegations of sexual harassment, was asked to go on leave from all posts.

The council decided that Pachauri will be on leave from TERI, its governing council and the university till further review.

Former director general of Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ajay Mathur was appointed as the new TERI-DG with full executive powers.

Pachauri was recently elevated to the newly-created post of executive VC, a move which triggered severe criticism from the alumni and women activists across the country.

The Delhi High Court is hearing a case in which a former researcher accused Pachauri of sexually harassing her. Another former colleague too recently went public with allegations that he harassed her 10 years ago.

During the day several activists demonstrated outside the green body's office demanding that Pachauri be sacked.
