KOCHI: Students always look up to teachers as role models and it is inevitable that quality teachers are needed. Most passing out of BEd colleges lack in teaching qualities especially in communication skills. Teachers have a great role in moulding the future citizens and need to be equipped to handle students from various backgrounds and different levels of performance with love and patience and also to handle any kind of curriculum transaction. To ensure that these qualities are met, the Al-Ameen Educational Trust has launched Al-Ameen Finishing School for Teachers (CBSE).   First of its kind in the state the Finishing School was inaugurated recently by Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas. It aims to offer training to those out of BEd institutions and teachers in schools across the city and hopes to bring about the much-needed change in the present teaching system. "On my visits to various schools as CBSE Schools Management Association I noticed that many teachers were wanting in orientation and commitment and thus the idea of a finishing school came up," said T P M Ibrahim Khan, also chairman and managing director, Al-Ameen Public School.  The residential course with a duration of one week to four weeks will kick start in April. Senior principals, and experts in different fields will impart knowledge in first-aid, psychology and other subjects. Demonstration classes will be held soon after school reopens in June, he said.   Initially the school will open with two batches of 30 teachers each. The fee is `2,000 for a week including food, accommodation and study materials, he said.  Soft skill development, effective communication skills, interpersonal skills, public speaking and presentation skills and IT skills comprise the modules to be covered. Besides, training in new teaching methodology, classroom strategies, understanding the needs of different learners, effective implementation of lesson plan, dealing with powers and responsibilities, effective CCE implementation and question paper setting will be imparted. Teachers will be guided to create lesson plans according to the needs of the learner.   This programme hopes to empower teachers so that they can connect to students easily. They can also help students develop vision and life skills, adopt and adapt to IT skills and offer motivation and inspiration and enrich their analytical abilities , he said. Principal of Al-Ameen Pubic School Saroja Sahadevan, Vice-Principal Shefeena Nizam are the directors and Bharathi is the programme coordinator.  "This is a programme to restructure the destiny of the country through the hands of powerful mentors," said Saroja. The training will help candidates keep abreast of emerging trends in teaching. It will help the teachers to  boost their self-confidence and turn them into life-long learners. It will maintain a high standard of teaching and learning strategies both as a learner and teacher. The candidates will be evaluated after the rigorous training and certificate given. A one-week inhouse crash course is also offered.
