HYDERABAD: Andasu Ravinder, the Income-Tax official who was arrested by the CBI while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50 lakh in Chennai on Tuesday, had been on the radar of the agency for the last few years. A native of Khammam district in the state, Ravinder, son of a retired police inspector, was frequently shifted from one post to another allegedly after the IT vigilance wing gathered a lot of material against him. Ravinder did stints in Coimbatore, Erode, Mumbai, Kalyan (Thane), Orissa and Tamil Nadu, where he was posted as additional commissioner (companies range), never staying long in any one post. In fact, he once reportedly managed to wriggle out of a CBI probe in the nick of time. However, he was never given a posting in the city.“At many of the places where he worked, there were vigilance reports against him; therefore, the frequent transfers,’’ sources said.Sources told Express that Ravinder came under the CBI scanner while working in Mumbai. His name, they said, first cropped up during a CBI probe in connection with a bribery case. A businessman had written to the CBI following which the agency started a probe. Even as the probe was on and the agency gathered evidence against him, Ravinder wriggled out of the situation, allegedly using some of his high-profile contacts. As ‘punishment’ he was shifted to Kalyan where there were complaints against him again. He was moved to Orissa and then to Chennai, where he in charge of the companies range, considered an important wing of the IT department. The local unit of the CBI is understood to have carried out searches on some premises in Hyderabad and Vizag where Ravinder is alleged to own properties.
