PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Wednesday announced `159 crore as a relief package for those affected by cyclone Thane.Thanking the Centre for an interim relief of Rs 125 crore, Rangasamy said that the UT government has decided to disburse Rs 32 crore relief to fishermen, `44 crore to farmers, Rs 80 crore to those whose houses were damaged and `2.6 crore to compensate for loss of livestock.The CM assured that the distribution of relief would soon start and power would be restored in all areas before Pongal. Responding to a query on whether the interim relief of Rs 125 crore was adequate, Rangasamy said he had full faith in the government of India. While expressing hope that the Centre would provide more funds to the UT, he said Union Home P Chidambaram and the Union Minister of State would do the needful.Urging fishermen hit by Thane to resume their trade, the CM announced that the government would provide Rs 5.5 lakh for fully damaged mechanised wood and steel boats, Rs 4.5 lakh for partially damaged boats, Rs 2.5 lakh for fully damaged FRP mechanised boats, Rs 2 lakh for partially damaged mechanised FRP boats, Rs 2 lakh for those who lost FRP motorised boats and Rs 33,000 for non-mechanised FRP boats and catamarans. Nets would also be provided by the government.Further, considering the fact that they were unable to venture out to sea due to the cyclone, an assistance of Rs 3,000 per ration card would be provided. Similarly, fish farmers would be given compensation of Rs 15,000 per hectare.The break-up of relief amounts to be distributed to farmers is: (per hectare) Rs 20,000 for paddy, Rs 15,000 for groundnuts, pulses, tapioca, cashew, cereals and flower varieties, Rs 30,000 for sugarcane, Rs 35,000 for banana, Rs 50,000 for betel vine and Rs 800 for a coconut tree. For fully damaged houses, Rs 15,000 would be provided as compensation, the CM said, adding that Rs 10,000 would be the relief amount for partially damaged houses and Rs 10,000 for damaged huts. The enumeration of the damaged houses and huts is in progress.Rangasamy said Rs 20,000 would be given for lost cows, Rs 5,000 for calves, Rs 2,000 for goats, Rs 100 for chicken, Rs 500 for turkey and Rs 25 for Japanese bird. Similarly, Rs 4,000 would be the relief for damage to cattle sheds, the CM added.
