ONGOLE: The onset of economic slowdown in the country has triggered a reverse migration in the district as more and more manual labourers, who had moved to various cities in search of livelihood, now coming back to their villages.According to the information, about one lakh people belonging to 400 villages in the district, who were working in various cities in the country, have come back to their native for either no employment or termination of contracts." I had no regular employment since the past three months after my job contract was terminated.Left with no other option, I returned to my village," says Battini Ramesh, a native of Machavaram village of Prakasam district, who was working as a manual labourer in the construction industry for the past nine years in Hyderabad.It may be noted that Prakasam district stands second in the number of migrants in the state after Mahaboobnagar district. The reverse migration is gathering momentum in the district, according to the labour agents. "Another one lakh manual labourers are likely to come back to their villages from Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai late in this month with their job contracts coming to an end", said V N Raja Rao, a manual labourer agent for the construction companies in the metros.Most of them are from Kanigiri, Darsi and Kandukuru mandals, he added.Meanwhile, the manual labourers which are the victim of reverse migration, expressed concerned about to the lack of employments in the villages. Many of them have returned with the hope of getting employment under the government schemes like National Rural Employment guarantee Scheme(NREGS), unaware of the fact that the district had a consistent record of bad implementation of the job guarantee scheme.
