HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Petroleum Dealerscum- Tank Truck Operators Welfare Committee (APPDTTOWC) has threatened to go on an indefinite strike from April 16 if the state government fails to withdraw the value added tax on trucks which transport petroleum products. Over 250 members from across the state belonging to various associations under the banner of APPDTTOWC gathered at Vanasthalipuram here on Sunday. The meeting was chaired by committee president YV Eeshwar Rao.General secretary M Kumaraswamy and others attended. The members took strong objection to the state government's decision to levy VAT on transport trucks carrying petrol and diesel from various depots to petrol pumps in the state.Speaking to Express, Kumaraswamy said that if the government failed to respond to their pleas, particularly on relaxation of VAT, on or before April 15, all the 6,000 truck operators, including 1,000 from Greater Hyderabad, will stop plying the trucks that carrying petroleum products from April 16.“It is very unfortunate on the part of the state government to levy VAT on petroleum carriers. When we get 2 to 3 percent profit margin, how can the government levy 14.5 percent VAT? It is ridiculous and absurd. Moreover, we are working in a hazardous condition as carrying petroleum products is life-threatening,'' he said and alleged officials were seizing the bank accounts of truck operators.
