A 4.39 km 8-tiered tunnel to be excavated through the hills of Matheran’s eco-sensitive zone will help in conveniently reaching Delhi from Mumbai. The tunnel’s construction will start at the Morbe village at the foothills of Matheran near Panvel. It will extend to the Bhoj village near Ambernath in the Thane district. As per the reports, the time taken from Mumbai to Delhi will be reduced from 24 to 12 hours. This 4.39 km long tunnel is a part of the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway. 8 cross passages (connections between tunnel tubes, generally equipped as egress and intervention routes) are being made in this tunnel. The excavation work for building the 8-tiered tunnel has been started from Badlapur in Thane district, a part of Matheran hills. It will help wild animals to cross the road. Spanning 1350 km, this road is expected to be the longest in the world and will connect Delhi to the JNPT port in Uran. This project aims to drastically cut the travel time from Badlapur to Panvel from one and a half hours to just 15 minutes over a 38 km stretch.
Vadodara Mumbai Expressway is a roughly 379-kilometre-long expressway currently under construction.
