Kolkata: Ahead of the five-day Durga puja festival, a powerful explosion in a cracker factory rocked North Kolkata killing one person and injuring four others while pulling down a portion of a house in a congested area, police said.
The blast occurred in an unauthorised cracker factory at Shyambazar, the hub of North Kolkata, causing a part of the building to collapse, police said.
The deceased was identified as Bijoy Bera.
Four others who were injured were rushed to nearby R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The condition of one person is stated to be serious.
Police Commissioner RK Pachnanda and Deputy Commissioner (North) rushed to the spot.
"We are investigating to find out how a cracker factory existed in such a prominent place," an investigating officer said.
