Information Minister Tariq Azim said the security provided was adequate.

New Delhi: Former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto had a narrow escape on Thursday night when twin blasts ripped through her motorcade in this port city leaving 164 people dead and over 200 injured.

Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif has blamed the Pakistan government for its negligence to provide adequate security to Bhutto.

“The basic responsibility lies on the government. They are the ones who are responsible to provide security to national leader like Benazir Bhutto. It was an extraordinary situation and I think the government should have really made extraordinary arrangements and full proof arrangements to ensure that there was no untoward incident,” Nawaz Sharif said.

Nawaz Sharif is planning to delay his second return bid to Pakistan till after November 15, after a neutral caretaker government takes charge.

Information Minister Tariq Azim said the security provided was adequate.

“Every effort was been made to provide extra security to Bhutto. She was provided with a bulletproof car, jeep as well as electronic jammers. She had herself insisted that she will not go in the car but will go on the special designed truck. When she was riding along with her colleagues the incident happened,” Tariq said.

“When the blast took place she was inside the bus. But every single precaution that could have been taken was in fact taken by the govt. We have also send her warning note to delay her arrival into Pakistan because we had information that may be attempt on her life following her remarks in Washington, “ he added.

Meanwhile Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao strongly condemn the blast and said that this is a very unfortunate incident.

“This is a very unfortunate incident and it occurred when there was huge supporter gathered to welcome Bhutto. The two bomb blasts took place surrounding the truck of Bhutto. We still have to determine whether they were suicide bombers or explosives laid somewhere else but apparently it seems they were suicide bombers, Sherpao said.
