KANNUR: Even as the  murder of RMP leader TP Chandrasekharan continues to rock the state, the CPM is going ahead with a vigorous damage control campaign. The CPM had found itself on the defensive  since the murder nearly a week ago. As the SIT failed to catch up with the leaders of the quotation gang who carried out the operation, the political masters of the plot could enjoy the ‘benefit of doubt’.An inadvertent remark made by DGP Jacob Punnoose that as a police person he could not view the murder as a political crime  triggered another bout of arguments and counter-arguments between the Home Minister and CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. Incidentally, the DGP’s honest observation provided a sort of relief to the CPM leadership.Pinarayi Vijayan himself has been in the forefront of the campaign designed to defend his party in the CPM fortress here for the last couple of days, as the murder has done much damage to the party.Addressing nearly half a dozen party-sponsored meetings every day at CPM strongholds, including Kalliassery, Koothuparamba, Panur and Thalassery, Pinarayi has been reiterating that the party leadership had not been even remotely linked with the murder.“The CPM had no need to kill Chandrasekharan especially when those who left the party along with him were coming back to the party. Those who left the party had never been attacked physically by the party,” asserted Pinarayi.
