Mumbai Police orders probe into raids at hotels, lodges
Consenting couples were allegedly dragged out of their hotel rooms and were subjected to humiliation and harassment in the hands of the police.

Mumbai: Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria has ordered a probe into last week's raids at hotels and lodges during which couples were allegedly detained.

Consenting couples were allegedly dragged out of their hotel rooms and were subjected to humiliation and harassment in the hands of the police. Police though claimed that raids were held at the hotels of Aksa Beach following complaints by locals regarding acts of public indecency.

Harish Shetty, a hotelier, said, "The raid was carried out in this hotel.Police do come for regular checks. But I don't know what happened day before when then came and fined my guests. They may have had a tip off but nothing illegal was going on. My guests did get annoyed. They had provided ID cards but yet they were fined. It does affect our business. Being a part of the hotel association, AHAR, we will take up the matter with the police."
