KOCHI: A meeting to review the status of the drinking water projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for Kochi will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.Convened by Water Resources Minister P J Joseph, the meeting is expected to discuss the initiatives for solving the portable water crisis faced by the city, especially the West Kochi area. The ministers from the district, the MLAs and Mayor Tony Chammany will attend the meeting. Meanwhile, a majority of the divisions under the West Kochi area is reeling under acute water shortage. The unexpected stoppage of water supply by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) hit the Easter day celebrations in many areas in the Chearalai division.“There was no water supply in areas like TD East Road, Pallikkara Kaavu Road, Lalan Road and Elanjikkalaparambu Road on Sunday. I tried to contact the KWA officials in vain,” said Cheralai councilor Syamala S Prabhu.Apart from Cheralai, divisions including, Edakochi, Thazhappu, Fort Kochi, Kalvathy, Iraveli, Karipalam and Mattanchery are also hit hard by drinking water shortage. Adding to the woes is the uncertainty over two major drinking water projects - the water supply improvement scheme financed by the Department for International Development (DFID) and the `201-crore Maradu water treatment plant. Both these projects, proposed to solve the water crisis, are being left in the lurch. The review meeting that will be held at Thiruvananthapuram is expected to take a decision on these projects.
