Lage Raho Munna Bhai has set the tone. You close your eyes, recite the hymn the Mahatma used to sing and he'll be there to help you...to rescue you out of a sticky situation...through his ideology.

Doesn't it remind us of Gautam Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Dayanand Saraswati and Vivekananda. All were born very much human and lived very human lives till an incident changed them one day. Then all of them respectively set some rules for themselves and preached the same to the masses hoping to change the world into a better place.

I won't relate to Lord Rama and Krishna here as they have been said to have supernatural powers. They were actually "Gods in human garb".

They were incarnations of God. But Buddha, Mahavir, Dayanand, and Vivekananda were all human beings with no supernatural powers. They came to be revered and later deified because of their austere lifestyles, because of the ideologies they practiced and preached.

As time passed, years down the line, their followers formed religions based on their respective preaching. So, though a little late, this is exactly what's happening to Gandhi.

Gandhi has had his followers through generations, but after Independence they have been few and far between and many others have chosen not to be very vocal about their reverence to the Father of the Nation. It has been noticed that especially the youngsters have been embarrassed to publicly admit their admiration for the Mahatma. Their friends have mocked those who have done so.

But one Lage Raho.....and things have changed dramatically. We have a report, among many others, of two children who ran and picked up a coke can, which had been carelessly discarded by a woman on the roadside. They picked it up and threw it in a dustbin nearby even as the woman watched, embarrassed.

There may be cases of people not reported yet, who may have installed pictures or statues of the Mahatma in their rooms and like our very own Munnabhai may be reciting Raghupati Raghav Rajaram...and praying for a good life. There may be people practicing non-violence now without feeling ashamed. In fact, one should already be prepared to come across a child, a teenager or even someone older, with eyes closed, hands joined saying something like, "Bapu please help me pass my exams" or "be there when I am playing the basketball match for my school/college" or "stand by me when I face my boss today" etc. It seems India is on the way to a new religion - Gandhiism or Bapuism.

The Father of the Indian Nation will at last get his due. Thanks to Munnabhai....although the 20th century scientist Albert Einstein had hinted at it years ago. Remember his words?

"Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood."
