BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Government’s Policy Planning Body (PPB) on Professional Education on Thursday decided that a second round of counselling will be held by the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Committee to fill up the large number of vacant seats in the technical colleges of the State. The counselling will be held for all streams - Engineering, lateral entry, MBA, MCA and Pharmacy. It is likely to be held in the first week of September. Candidates who had not registered themselves for the counselling can appear in the second round. Similarly, aspirants who had registered but did not go in for admission can also take part. The dates for the second round of counselling are likely to be announced by the Industries Department on Friday. The ongoing web-based counselling process which has entered the phase of allotment will end on September 2. Thursday was the last date for fees deposit by the candidates who have been allotted seats. With about 21,000 candidates vying for allotment from over 38,000 seats in different private engineering colleges of the State, most institutions are staring huge vacancies in the face. The private engineering colleges are, however, hopeful of getting at least 5,000 seats filled up in the second round.During the PPB meeting, the private colleges demanded that students who have computer science, IT, electronics and telecommunication as fourth optional subjects should also be considered eligible for the counselling. “It is weird that students with biology as fourth elective are deemed eligible for engineering but not those who have IT or electronics,” honorary secretary of Orissa Private Engineering Colleges Association (OPECA) Binod Dash said. Such a bar exists only in Orissa and that is because these subjects were overlooked while the JEE information brochure was prepared, he added.
