HYDERABAD: A recent study conducted by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) in AP, has identified as many as 734 martyrs, who laid down their lives in the national freedom struggle between 1857 and 1948. The identified martyrs' details will be included in the 'Dictionary of Indian Martyrs' which will be compiled and published by the ICHR. In 2009, the ICHR launched a project National Register of Martyrs (NRM) to identify martyrs in every state across the country. The ICHR started the study in the state at the AP State Archives and Research Institute six months ago with three research scholars and one coordinator. So for, the study has identified 734 martyrs in the state.
Of these, 658 were from Telangana, 73 from coastal Andhra and three from Rayalaseema, Prof Vakulabharanam Ramakrishna, coordinator of the AP zonal project has said. "The project will be completed by March 2012 in the state," he said. The study is based on secondary sources like government publications, newspapers, pamphlets and books published between 1857 to 1948 and other books, records published by the government. The ICHR has undertaken the project at the request of the Union ministry of culture, Ramakrishna said. "Though the government has been spending public money to give pensions to freedom fighters, it did not have a comprehensive list of martyrs," he said. ''This work should have been done after the Indian independence. But it took more than 60 years to publish a 'Dictionary of Martyrs.' Now we are preparing the list of martyrs after a thorough research,'' he said. The Central Information Commission approached the home ministry to draw up the NRM for the future generations for reference.

The Dictionary of Indian Martyrs will have biographical information on those who died (custodial or noncustodial) in the course of freedom struggle between 1857 and 1948 and also the circumstances of their martyrdom. "This study will help every student who wants to know more about martyrs," said M Sammanna, a Ph.D student in history at OU.
