THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 1,000-seat convention centre named after G V Raja, the first chairman of Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC), will be the highlight of an expansion project currently underway at KTDC’s Hotel Samudra at Kovalam. The convention centre with an air- conditioned dining space on the ground floor, is the only one of its kind in the Kovalam belt. The expansion project is part of the ‘tourist focus’ activities of KTDC. Though the flooring work of the convention centre is pending, the hotel has already rented out the space twice. The landscaping work of the surroundings and other beautification works, including extensive fancy lighting will be completed by the end of December, said hotel Manager Sunil Suomaraj. “The rooms, which have a total of 128 beds, have been refurbished and the reception area extended and redesigned to reflect the theme of the ocean. The layout of the restaurant has also been reworked and pavilions have been built outside it to face the sea and the lawn,” he said. He added that the convention centre will have the logistic advantage of being at a walking distance from hotel majors Surya Samudra and Taj Vivanta. A staff rest room and changing room for drivers accompanying guests are also being constructed. The refurbishing of premium and budget hotels owned by KTDC has largely been completed in the last six to seven months. Internet bookings are also in place for these hotels. Internet accessibility for the Tamarind group of hotels is also being worked on. The new KTDC project in Chennai is nearing completion and will be due for opening early next year, said an informed source.
