New Delhi: Gunshots near Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence at 7 Race Course Road have sent ripples across the security agencies on Wednesday night.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that it was an accidental firing after an assault rifle of a policeman went off suddenly at the media parking bay around 8.30 pm. However, it is yet to be confirmed that the weapon was AK-47. The incident took place during shift change and it is reported that the arms was having some mechanical problem.
Soon after the incident a team of armed policemen along with the senior officials of IB, SPG and Delhi police rushed to the spot and seized the weapon from the policeman who was manning a PCR van. He was detained and taken for interrogation.
Nobody sustains injuries and it seems that there is no foul play behind the incident. A high level probe has been ordered and security agencies were asked to submit its preliminary report within 24 hours to the Union Home Ministry.
The intelligence agencies are examining the antecedents of the constable and a case was being registered at Chanakyapuri police station.
