CHENNAI: “No, we will not allow anyone inside without the permission of our bosses”. This was the curt reply of a guard outside the house of ex- Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran to the CBI slueths, who knocked at the imposing wrought iron gates of the sprawling campus on the upmarket Boat Club Road on Monday morning.Though the team did manage to enter the house half an hour later and conduct searches for close to nine hours, they had to face obstacles and snubs from the household staff. When the CBI team from New Delhi, headed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Ravi Gambir, reached the gate, it was around 7.10 am. “We are from CBI, open the gate,” said an officer in white shirt and dark trousers.Looking out through a peep hole in the gate, the guard, after snubbing the official, slammed the window on his face. Even threats of arrest by the CBI official did not move the guard, who made the team wait for about 25 minutes on the road. Then, the officials started making calls to the local police. They were heard asking for the mobile number of the ‘superintendent of police’ in charge of the area.It was then a household worker came with a plastic bag and called out to the security guard. Oblivious of the waiting CBI team, the worker was keen on going about his work and was a wee bit peeved when the gate did not open quickly. Then, about 10 minutes later, the peep hole opened and the guard looked out to check the caller’s identity.Seeing the familiar face, he opened the gate when the CBI team tried to barge in. But the domestic help shoved them away and squeezed his way through the open gate. However, before the gates were closed again the CBI officials managed to walk through the gates, little knowing that it was not the last hurdle. As they approached the doors of the bungalow, which is quite a distance away from the gate, a woman stopped them. They had to tackle her, arguing for about five minutes before entering the house. By then the sleuths had wasted precious 30 minutes.
